Valentino's British themed toddler room tour

I've been really busy lately with the holidays coming up and the kids birthdays, so I haven't had much time for blogging. Between balancing time with the kids and chores and anything else that needs to be done I feel like I have zero time for anything. BUT I did design a fabulous room for my baby (it only took me two years) :p

Earlier in the year, I told my husband that as a birthday present I wanted to design both babies bedrooms. They have been pretty much plain and boring since we moved into our current home last year, and because I was pregnant during that time and a few months later gave birth to Caspian, I didn't have the time or energy to decorate their rooms.

I chose a theme and color for each of their rooms. For Valentino I thought a London theme would be cute and I liked the color red for him. I'll tell you all about Caspian's room in another blog post.

It was really hard to find cute British items for his room, and I'm still constantly on the lookout for anything cute, red, and British that is appropriate for a toddler bedroom. There are still so many things I'm looking for (like a red telephone booth peice of furniture that is wooden and good quality and that won't kill him if he knocks it on himself). I may have to get one custom made. It's all still a work in progress. Here are some before and after pictures of his nursery.

This is what Valentino's room looked like before I decorated it:

Pretty plain and boring. It's hard to decorate a toddler's room because you have to take so many things into consideration, such as wires, electricity hazards, heavy objects, drawers that his fingers could get stuck in, furniture that may topple over and hurt him, etc. In the above picture, on the very right side you'll notice that I have furniture stuck closely together so that Valentino wouldn't be able to get to what's behind it (which is a standing lamp and other cables). We had to change this arragement though once he began climbing the sofa chair and toppling head over into that forbidden area of wires and cables. I had to take all that into consideration and it was quite hard trying to figure out something that was safe and yet still looked appealing.

His crib is from Restoration Hardware. It converts into a toddler bed, but I think Valentino has a while to go until we convert it. He is not to be trusted yet. Here's the link for it:

The rug, valances and small red toddler chair are from Pottery Barn. Pottery Barn really gave us the run around with that red chair. They were constantly sending the wrong sizes and it took about two months of sending back and forth until they got it right. I'm definitely never ordering anything from pottery barn online again as I wasted so much time trying to get them to do their job and send me what I paid for. That's really too bad because I do love their stuff.

The bookcase / toy storage thing I got from Amazon, along with the bench and the canvas.

I got the wooden letters that spell his name from Michaels, and I spray painted them red. It was so much more affordable to do it that way than to purchase the letters from anywhere else. I also made the garland hanging from the valances from string and pom poms. The oversized Mickey Mouse stuffed toy is from Costco, and the Buckingham Palace bear is literally from Buckingham Palace. The rest of the British toys are from London. I wanted British elements because that's where Valentino's daddy was raised and I want to familiarize him with all things British.

Right now the room looks more like it's got a Mickey Mouse theme going than a British theme, but in time that'll change as I collect more stuff. Also, it will be so much easier decorating his room once he starts maturing and doesn't try to destroy anything and everything he can get his hands on.

Here are some pics of Valentino's nursery when he was a newborn. He was so tiny here! Where has time gone? I cannot believe he's almost two now.

Yes it's a different room (we lived in a different home back then)......

I had Valentino's nursery painted light blue with white polka dots on one wall. It looked way cuter than it is here. The pictures don't do it justice. The polka dots were painted on using the top lid of the paint can as an outline.

We put a bed in his nursery as we anticipated there would be long sleepless nights and that we could take turns in sleeping there. We actually didn't use it for sleeping and ended up using it more as a changing facility.

We had shelves installed in his closet to maximize space.

Ok definitely should NOT have used a crib bumper. These things can suffocate your baby. I do NOT recommend (even though Valentino never had a problem with them).

That concludes Valentino's room tour(s). I'll do one for Caspian soon. Hope you enjoyed it!! <3
